GORHAM – Gorham public safety officials classified a fire Tuesday at a vacant house on Spiller Road as suspicious, and it’s under investigation.
Two fast-acting Gorham firefighters traveling to work at the West Gorham Fire Station spotted the fire at 70 Spiller Road.
“They knocked it down with their extinguisher,” Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said.
Gorham Police Chief Ronald Shepard and Lefebvre both said the fire was suspicious. Along with firefighters, Gorham Detective Sgt. Dana Thompson responded to the scene along with Gorham Police Officer David Bruni.
Thompson will work with the state fire marshal’s office in the investigation.
Lefebvre said the fire, of unknown origin, was outside the building, burned grass near the home and melted vinyl siding. Lefebvre praised the firefighters who discovered the fire while passing by.
“Another minute, the way the wind was blowing,” Lefebvre said, adding the place would have been “rocking.”
Lefebvre said a mortgage company owns the property.
