THE ASH POINT COMMUNITY CENTER begins regular hours this week in the former West Harpswell Elementary School.

HARPSWELL — After standing vacant for more than six months, the West Harpswell School now hosts the Ash Point Community Center and library.

With around 1,500 books that belonged to the former school library, the center will be open for selected hours from Monday through Thursday.

Elizabeth Davis, a member of the management team and a home schooling parent, said that the library is open to all and aims to provide a particular resource to parents of children being home schooled.

On March 20, the community center held its first event — a Harpswell Home Schoolers potluck lunch.

On Wednesday, the center will hold its first open house from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Davis said.

Since the center opened, Davis has been in touch with roughly 10 families with 24 children who are being home schooled in Harpswell.

In addition to hosting the library, the center will aim to provide other community activities such as yoga classes and opportunities to use the school’s gym, Davis said.

The center will establish regular weekly hours this week, Davis said. The center will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Wednesdays, the center will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

The center — started and managed by Davis, Dave Chipman, Donna Frisoli and Lisa Nelson — also continues to seek donations of adult and children’s fiction. Earlier this month, the center accepted its first large donation of 45 chairs and five large tables from the West Harpswell Baptist Church.
