AUGUSTA (AP) — Mayors of 10 of Maine’s largest cities are announcing a coalition to push for jobs and economic development.
The mayors of Auburn, Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford, Lewiston, Portland, Saco, South Portland, Waterville and Westbrook plan to announce their coalition today in the State House.
They will also present a statement of principles that will be a guide for their work and set forth an agenda for the remaining weeks of the legislative session.
Mayors have already been vocal on at least one topic: the state budget.
They say Gov. Paul Le- Page’s proposal to change the way general assistance money is distributed would shift costs to property taxpayers and increase homelessness.
Portland Mayor Michael Brennan says the plan calls for the most far- reaching change to Maine’s General Assistance funding in two decades.
