BRUNSWICK — Arthur Edward Sturtevant died peacefully at his home on March 13th.

He was born in Bath on June 30, 1919, moved to Atlantic Heights, Portsmouth, NH and then returned to Bath to graduate from Morse High School in the class of 1938. Arthur was a World War II veteran who was drafted in March of 1941. He started as a private and finished as a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. He married his girlfriend, Barbara Bell, on March 27, 1943. He was shipped overseas five days later and was away for two years serving in the campaigns of North Africa and Italy.

After the War, Art returned to the Hyde Windlass Company to finish his machinist training to become a guarantee engineer. He had a distinguished forty-two year career as Guarantee Engineer for the Bath Iron Works, including giving his expert testimony at the Sea Witch trial. He traveled the world for his work and loved San Francisco and Seattle. He was a member of the Naval Architects Society.

Art was very involved in the civic life of Bath, Maine. At the time of his election to the City Council, he was the youngest person ever to serve. He was a volunteer fireman for many years, Grand Exalted

Ruler and lifetime member of the Elks Club, a Patten Free Library Trustee and a member of the Corporal Works of Mercy at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. In recent years, Art was active in the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

Mr. Sturtevant was known for his generosity. If anyone needed a loan or a helping hand, he would give it. He was also an inveterate reader and born storyteller.

Arthur Sturtevant was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Margaret and his two brothers, Robert II and John.

He leaves his wife of 69 years, Barbara, and three daughters, Sue of Farmington, CT, Joanne Anable (Al) of Holderness, NH and Peggy O’Connor (Declan) of Belfast, ME. He also had four loving grandchildren, Kate Anable, Brooke Anable, Maeve O’Connor and Ned O’Connor. He also leaves eight nieces and nephews.
