HARPSWELL — Fishermen from Harpswell are scheduled to volunteer with the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation ( GOLMF) Monday and Tuesday to collect derelict fishing gear.
The effort is one of two in the region, according to Lynda Doughty of the GOLMF, with another collection out of Portland Harbor this week.
Fishermen will land the derelict gear at Interstate Lobster on Ash Point Road for next week’s collection in Harpswell.
Derelict gear “can present hazards to navigation or harvesting, limit new trap setting and potentially increase by catch of fish and other marine life,” a press release states.
Anyone interested in organizing a similar community clean up in their area is asked to contact Erin Pelletier at the GOLMF at 985-8088.
