NORRIDGEWOCK — Police today released the identity of a man who died at his home Tuesday morning after declining medical attention at an automobile crash.

The man, John Mosher, 54, of Smithfield, was checked at the scene of the accident on Main Street by ambulance personnel from Redington-Fairview General Hospital and was released at his request, according to Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of the the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department. Mosher appeared to have cuts on his head and arm, but declined to be taken to the hospital, he said.

Mosher was alone in his red, 1994 Ford Mustang when he apparently lost control of the car as he left the Cumberland Farms parking lot about 2:45 a.m., Tuesday, Gottardi said. There was extensive damage to his car after it slammed into a light post on the driver’s side of the vehicle, he said.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to Mosher’s home on Village Road about 6:30 a.m., Gotardi said.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office was scheduled to conduct an autopsy today to determine the cause of death. The accident is still under investigation by Cpl. Ritchie Putnam, Gottardi said.

The sheriff’s department was assisted at the scene by Norridgewock Fire Department.
