AUGUSTA — Republican Maine Senate President Kevin Raye and Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud have filed their qualifying petitions for the June primary ballot.
Raye, who hopes to unseat Michaud in the state’s 2nd Congressional District, filed his petitions Tuesday afternoon, and Michaud followed suit the same day.

The Secretary of State’s Office is bracing for a flood of petitions as next week’s deadline nears. Congressional candidates need 1,000 signatures; Senate candidates need 2,000.
While the 2nd District race is more settled, Sen. Olympia Snowe’s decision not to seek re-election has thrown both the Senate race and the 1st District race into disarray, with nearly a dozen candidates mulling a bid for Snowe’s seat and others waiting to see how that plays out in the congressional race.
