The 54th Grammy Awards last Sunday were a stellar success, garnering almost 40 million viewers — the second-most-watched Grammy broadcast in history.
But as always, there were some awards that should have been given out that weren’t. Here’s a look at the Grammys That Should Have Been:
Best Beekeeper Costume: Lady Gaga. Not as gross as the meat costume and not as bizarre as being hatched out of an egg, but still — I almost expected her to start handing out jars with “HUNNY” scribbled on them.
Best Lightning in a Bottle Moment: The Civil Wars. Probably the shortest performance at the Grammys (they introduced Taylor Swift with a 60-second version of “Barton Hollow”), but also one of the most electrifying.
The Revenge is Sweet Award: Katy Perry, for her vocal smackdown of estranged hubby Russell Brand with the new song “Part of Me.” Runner-up: Taylor Swift’s more humorous, but no less biting, attack on music critics with her Grammy-winning song “Mean.”
Best Tribute: Jennifer Hudson’s tearful rendition of “I Will Always Love You” in honor of Whitney Houston, followed closely by an Etta James tribute by Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys.
Biggest Faux Pas: Bruce Springsteen’s shout-out to kick off the ceremony: “America, are you alive out there?” Oops.
The Age Doesn’t Diminish Talent Award: Three-way tie between Tony Bennett, Paul McCartney and The Beach Boys, who all showed the young’uns how it’s done.
Best Retro Performance: Bruno Mars, for his gold-lame-suited, soul-dripping performance straight out of an early ’60s show at the Apollo.
Best Retro Hairstyle: Bruno Mars again, for his Jackie Wilson-style pompadour. No one’s looked that cool since Buster Poindexter.
Worst Retro Hairstyle: Katy Perry, for trying to bring back the Oompa Loompa look.
The “What The?!” Award: Nicki Minaj’s “exorcism” performance. At least there wasn’t any projectile vomiting.
Best Beach Boy Lookalike: The keyboard player who backed Foster the People, for his uncanny resemblance to Brian Wilson, circa 1965.
Keeping It Real Award: Adele, who not only provided the best vocal performance of the night and snagged the most Grammys, but gave some of the most unguarded acceptance speeches ever. Highlight: “I’ve got a bit of snot!”
