ALBERT PAINE, right, a pilot who served in the U.S. Air Force and its predecessors from Dec. 15, 1939, through Dec. 31, 1972, became a member of the Bath Elks Lodge during a special ceremony on Thursday evening. Paine, 92, of Woolwich, piloted B-17 bomber missions during World War II. He served as a flight engineer from 1948 until he retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant in 1972. During that tenure, he flew in B-29 bombers in Korea and C-97 cargo aircraft during the Vietnam War. When asked Thursday why, at age 92, he decided to join the Elks, Paine replied with a grin, “No one asked me to before.” Welcoming Paine to the lodge is Bath Elks member Roger Beaulieu, left.
