To mark the convergence of Valentine’s Day and the buildup to this year’s Academy Awards presentations, Patten Free Library will launch a nine-week film series featuring Oscar-winning love stories.
Beginning at 2 p. m. Wednesday, the library will screen films chosen from “100 Years … 100 Passion,” a list of the greatest love stories of all time. Each film also won the Best Picture Oscar in its respective year.
The schedule includes four romantic comedies, three dramas and two musicals, including the following: a 1985 release based on the writings of Isak Dinesen starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford; a Woody Allen classic from 1977 starring one of Woody’s favorite leading ladies, Diane Keaton; Leonard Bernstein’s contemporary retelling of “Romeo & Juliet” set on the streets of New York City; and a 1934 screwball comedy with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable.

Show time is at 2 p.m. on nine consecutive Wednesdays in the library’s community room. Admission is free and open to the public, but donations are “always welcomed,” a library release states. Refreshments will be provided.
