BRUNSWICK — Leo C. Despres, 86, died peacefully on Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta. Leo was born in Brunswick on September 11, 1925 the son of Albert C. and Cecile ( Gamache) Despres. After attending local Brunswick schools, Leo joined the Merchant Marines and served on ships in France and Italy, on tugboats in Alaska and on tankers in the US before returning to Brunswick and marrying Priscilla B. Gagnon on June 26, 1948.

Leo worked at the Jenny filling station on Maine St. and eventually became a salesman and later a Sales Manager at several local Ford dealerships. In 1990, Leo retired after selling cars for 37 years.

Leo was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed hunting, saltwater and ice fishing. In 1963, along with his friend, Daryl Lamb, Leo built a 36 foot sportsfisherman, the Linda Gal, which was moored in Mackerel Cove, Bailey Island where he and his family and friends enjoyed years of tuna and cod fishing, cruising among the Casco Bay islands and up and down the Maine coast. In 1969, he and Priscilla purchased a rustic cabin in Andover, ME where he cared for his apple orchard, hunted, trimmed and marked trails and snowmobiled.

In 1993, he and Priscilla took the first of three cross country trips to Alaska through Canada, to the southern US states and to California visiting various State and National parks. A memorable snowmobile trip was shared with friends in Yellowstone as well as an African safari trip celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.

Leo was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. He was involved with the Brunswick Lodge of Elks as a charter member and served as Exalted Ruler in 1964 and was the Wagon Master for the Moose Trak Travelers Chapter of the Good Sam RV Club.

Surviving are his wife, Priscilla, of 63 years, and three children; Linda from Falmouth, MA, Richard and his wife, Michelle, of Portland and Robert of Topsham. He is also survived by a brother, Maurice, of Auburn.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Yolanda, and brother, Roger.

As per his wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on January 26 at St. John the Baptist Church in Brunswick. A private family burial will be held in the spring.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of his special caregivers at the Parkview Memorial Hospital, Maine Veterans Home and Health Reach Hospice who provided special attention and compassionate care during his final days.
