ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — Virginia Monks Burr, 92, St. Augustine, died January 15, 2012 at the Glenmoor Health Center. She was born January 6, 1920 in New York City, daughter of the late Jerome and Mabel Monks. She had resided in St. Augustine since 2005.

Virginia “ Ginny” was the warm light in her family. Her generosity and caring were legendary, and understated – she never claimed credit for her many good works.

Since 1974, Ginny and her husband, Ben, spent a large part of every year in Georgetown, even spending two winters there in the late 70’s. Ginny was active in the Georgetown Quilting League, and the Georgetown Historical Society, and she is fondly remembered by many friends there. Ginny also volunteered for many years at Bath Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church Brunswick, ME.

She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Munroe Burr, Sr,. St. Augustine, FL; two daughters, Pam Smith, Brunswick, and Sarah Burr (Timothy Lewis), Brooklyn, NY; a son, John E. Burr (Karen Koster Burr), Jacksonville, FL; a sister, Eileen Melvin, Southbury, CT; and two grandchildren, Emily Burr, Princeton, N.J., and Ian Burr, Jacksonville, FL.

She was predeceased by a son, Benjamin Jr., of Biddeford; one sister, Edith Stark of Shelter Island, NY and four brothers, Jerome Monks of Santa Fe, NM; Robert Monks of Sarasota FL; Allen Monks of Sarasota, FL, and John Monks of Palos Verdes, CA.

A funeral service was held on January 19th at the Glenmoor Chapel.

A memorial service will be held this summer in Georgetown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Georgetown Historical Society.
