Curtis Memorial throws ‘Brick’ on screen today

BRUNSWICK — Curtis Memorial Library will host a free screening of “Brick,” a 2005 “neo-noir” film featuring Joseph Gordon Leavitt in the lead role, at 7:30 p.m. today.

“Brick,” the first feature-length film by director Rian Johnson, pays homage to “The Maltese Falcon” and other film noir classics while unraveling a web of mysteries involving students at a California high school.

Admission is free. Enter via the library’s main entrance on Middle Street. Refreshments will be served.

The library’s four-part film noir series concludes Jan. 27 with a 7:30 p.m. showing of “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.”

Ron Carroll and Friends plan benefit show

PORTLAND — Ron Carroll and Friends will present a special tribute to Scott Joplin and Al Jolson at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 425 Congress St.

The show is a benefit for Scott Linscott, a minister and photographer in the Portland area. He is awaiting a liver transplant.

The cast will include Marcelle Lachance, Pam Tondreau, Ashley Smith, Dan Konieczko, Mike Millett, Michael Kron and local pianist Ron Carroll.

Selections will include “Solace,” “ Weeping Willow,” “ Peacherine Rag,” “The Entertainer,” “Swipesy” and “The Easy Winner.”

The cast will sing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Grand Old Flag,” “What a Wonderful World” and several other songs.

Tickets cost $10 and are available at the Hannaford supermarket in Brunswick. In the event of a snowstorm, the concert will take place at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 at the same venue.

Lincoln Theater screens opera premiere

DAMARISCOTTA — The Lincoln Theater, 2 Theatre St., will show a broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera’s world premiere of “ The Enchanted Island” at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A Lincoln Theater release describes the production as “an adventurous melding of Baroque operas by Handel, Vivaldi Rameau and others, set to a story that is itself a melding of two Shakespeare plays, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘The Tempest.’”

The cast includes Placido Domingo, Joyce DiDonato and David Daniels. The libretto was devised and written by Jeremy Sams, and the performance will be conducted by William Christie.

Individual tickets cost $ 23 for adults; $21 for seniors; and $16 for students. Lincoln Theater members receive a $2 discount.

Pirate party benefits Bath food bank

BATH — Fred and Sally’s “Winter Sucks” party, a fundraiser for the Bath Area Food Bank, will run from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 807 Middle St.

The Knights of Columbus will provide a cash bar with their “legendary strong drinks for short money for a charitable cause,” according to a release.

Scurvy Dick and the Yardarms, with special guests, will provide music. Pirate attire is recommended, but optional.
