BRUNSWICK — In November, Dr. Thomas Augat, a Brunswick chiropractic physician, was elected chairman of the Council on Chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters.
According to a news release, CCGPP is the profession’s national council on guidelines, evidencebased medicine and best practices.
“Our job is to thoroughly review and rate all the available scientific research and literature, and to develop practice guidelines to educate and empower doctors of chiropractic to make the best possible clinical decisions for their patients utilizing evidence-based medicine,” Augat said.

PORTLAND — Bernstein Shur, one of northern New England’s largest law firms, recently announced that attorney and shareholder Linda McGill of Freeport has been honored as “Volunteer of the Decade” by the International Senior Lawyers Project at its 10th anniversary gala luncheon in early December in New York.
The gala included guests of honor George Soros, founder and chairman of the Open Society Foundations, and Aric Press, editor in chief of American Lawyer Media.
McGill, who has served as a volunteer with ISLP for the past eight years, is among five attorneys who were selected for the honor. The distinction recognizes individuals in the practice of law who have worked tirelessly and diligently to carry out ISLP’s mission of providing world-class legal counsel to the global community in areas where legal assistance is greatly needed in order to promote the rule of law, human rights and equitable economic development.
As part of her service to ISLP, McGill traveled to New Delhi, India, including a prolonged five-month stay, to work with the Human Rights Law Network.
McGill is a member of Bernstein Shur’s Labor and Employment Practice Group as well as the firm’s Municipal and Regulatory Practice Group.
McGill has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine School of Law, teaching employment-discrimination law.
McGill is a 1971 graduate of Randolph-Macon Women’s College, where she received her B.S. She received her J.D. in 1978 from Northeastern University School of Law.
Bluhm joins physical therapy office
BRUNSWICK — Greater Brunswick Physical Therapy recently announced that Denise Bluhm, M.S.P.T., has joined the staff at its Brunswick office.
In 1999, Bluhm graduated from the University of Evansville in Indiana. She has provided physical therapy care in the Brunswick area for the past nine years.
In addition to her standard physical therapy education, Bluhm has completed specialized training in craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, manual lymphatic drainage and strain-counterstrain techniques.
Bluhm lives in Bowdoinham.
Irving awards $15K to research institute
PORTLAND — Irving Oil recently awarded $15,000 to support the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) LabVenture! Program in Portland through its Community Fuel Grant Program.
According to a news release, GMRI is one of the Northeast’s most widely respected marine research institutes and is making a long-term investment in science literacy by providing programs to ignite the curiosity, ambition, innovation, and problem-solving potential of Maine’s young students.
This year, Irving awarded $120,000 in grants to organizations throughout New England and Atlantic Canada.
“We are very pleased and proud to award organizations that help support education, the environment and communities in need throughout our region,” said Harry Hadiaris, general manager of Irving Oil.
“LabVenture! gives students a rare opportunity to try on the identity of a scientist,” said GMRI President Don Perkins. “They are thrilled to explore the marine world and interact with scientists in a working lab. Irving Oil’s commitment to students is significant. Their gift is enabling students to develop critical thinking skills that will prepare them for college, careers and active citizenship in a rapidly changing world.”
The Irving Oil Community Fuel Grant will help educate more than 10,000 Maine schoolchildren, including more than 700 students from Aroostook and Washington counties, which may not have been possible prior to the grant. LabVenture! costs nearly $100 per student and is funded entirely by donations.

Happy Scrappers comes to Newcastle
NEWCASTLE — All the Comforts and First Class Florals, located at 928 Route 1, Newcastle, recently welcomed Happy Scrappers into a whimsical collaboration.
Founded by Elesha Lee of Waldoboro in October, Happy Scrappers offers a wide variety of scrapbooking and papercrafting supplies; with everything from paper, albums, stickers, fancy ribbons, buttons, to embellishments.
Beginning Jan. 17, Happy Scrappers will be offering a new session of classes. This session will include the basics of cutting and matting pictures, choosing embellishments and stickers and color coordination. According to a news release, class size is limited to 10 people due to space restrictions, so early registration is recommended. Later courses will include: page design, card making and paper-craft gifts.
All the Comforts and Happy Scrappers will also be hosting Crafting Saturdays. Crafters are encouraged to bring their current projects in, which offers a chance to work on them in the company of fellow crafters on Saturday mornings during the winter months.
