PORTLAND — Maine retailers are reporting a brisk business with just hours to go before the big day.

Bakeries and other food businesses opened to long lines of customers at dawn. But by mid-afternoon the crowds will likely begin to taper off as retailers begin closing, stores said.

Many Old Port businesses said they would begin closing by 3 p.m. or so while the Maine Mall will keep the doors open to 6 p.m.

After that, the best bets for procrastinating shoppers may be L.L. Bean in Freeport, which never closes, or gas station mini-marts.
