MEGHAN BENTON stars in an opening scene for “Ragged Isle,” a horror series from Maine, created by the husband and wife team of Barry and Karen Dodd. The show centers around Vicki, a young newspaper reporter, who moves to secluded Ragged Isle, and finds herself in the midst of a series of murders and an ensemble of odd residents all capable of wigging out and doing some bodily harm.
The categories for which “Ragged Isle” are nominated for are “ Best Web Series” (Drama), “Best Actor” (Rick Dalton of Portland), “ Best Writing,” “ Best Directing” (Barry Dodd), “Best Ensemble ( Drama), “ Best use of music” and “Best Cinematography.”
Winners will be decided by the editors of “ We Love Soaps,” along with a panel of the nominees’ peers and will be announced in a ceremony in New York City on Feb. 21.
An additional potential award for the web series for the 2011 “ Fans’ Choice Award” will require online voting between Jan. 1 and Feb. 13 on welovesoaps.net.
“ Ragged Isle” is asking Mainers to come out and help support their hometown web series by voting online.
A news release describes the show as follows:
“Ragged Isle” is a culmination of Maine artists from all over the state- including writers, actors and musicians. Gorham-based husband and wife duo Barry and Karen Dodd began principal photography on the series’ first season in July 2010 and recently concluded shooting seasons two and three, to be released in 2012 on raggedisle.com.
Drawing inspiration from such cult classics as “The XFiles,” “Twin Peaks,” and the gothic soap opera “ Dark Shadows,” “Ragged Isle” has been crafted with genre fans in mind. With more than 30 talented actors and more than 20 picturesque Maine locations, this project is as ambitious as anything ever seen in an online series and has been recognized by We Love Soaps as the Indie Soap of the Week and by Indie Intertube as the Drama Pick of the Week, both on multiple occasions.
The entire first season was viewed at the KahBang Music and Art Festival in Bangor as the focus of the “ MaineStream” category. KahBang Festival founder Josh Whinery calls “Ragged Isle” “… the newest, freshest, most innovative thing on the scene this year.”
The Bangor Daily News wrote, “‘ Ragged Isle’ falls somewhere in between David Lynch’s bizarre cult classic series ‘ Twin Peaks’ and a much darker, more authentically Maine version of ‘Murder, She Wrote.’”
