With the state of Maine on a mission to present an honorable service certificate to every Maine veteran who served in the military, local legions are seeking veterans who haven’t received their certificate to attend the ceremony scheduled for Jan. 15 in Topsham.
According to a release issued by state American Legion representative William “ Chick” Ciciotte, the local legions will try to host the ceremonies monthly and is now preparing for a veterans recognition event Sunday, Jan. 15, at the American Legion Post 202 on Foreside Road in Topsham. The Topsham legion, in conjunction with the Brunswick American Legion Post 20 and American Legion Post 171 in Harpswell, want to recognize all Maine veterans who honorably served and with 150,000 veterans statewide, will try to recognize as many as they can in their towns by hosting ceremonies monthly in Topsham. In addition, recipients of the Purple Heart as well as prisoners of war are eligible to receive Silver Star Honorable Service Medals and families of veterans killed in action are eligible to receive a Gold Star Honorable Service Medal.
The legions are also seeking women veterans, who are also eligible to receive a new tribute in the form of a silver commemorative coin, in addition to their honorable service certificate. This year a plaque was dedicated to women veterans and hangs in the State House Hall of Flags.
