Sax ensemble plans Christmas concert

TOPSHAM — The Midcoast Maine Saxophone Sinfonia will perform a concert of Christmas music at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mid-Coast Presbyterian Church, 84 Main St.

The ensemble is composed of 10 saxophones, each with an individual part. The instrumentation is two sopranos, four altos, two tenors and two baritones. The arrangements were written by professional musician and former Brunswick resident, John Worley.

The pieces are popular sacred and secular, and performed by both professional and amateur musicians.

Cul de Sax, a saxophone quartet, will open the evening with Christmas favorites. They will be joined by six other saxes to make the Midcoast Maine Saxophone Sinfonia.

John Morneau, who conducts the Bowdoin College Concert Band, will direct the 10-piece ensemble.

A sing-along, accompanied by a saxophone quintet, will close the concert.

‘Miracles on School Street’ nears finale

BRUNSWICK — The Theater Project’s holiday show, “Miracles on School Street,” concludes this weekend.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, as well as at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The production includes a class of third- through fifth-graders presenting “The Penguin Who Saved Christmas;” “The Elf Rebellion,” by the sixth through eighth grade class; the Young Company’s take on Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” and their sometimes tuneful version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

A cast of actors from the community and The Theater Project’s Professional Ensemble and Center Stage Players stages an adaptation of John Cheever’s short story, “Christmas Is a Sad Season for the Poor.”

Orion Center hosts Boy Singers of Maine

TOPSHAM — The Boy Singers of Maine will present “A Starry Night of Song,” a matinee concert, at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Orion Performing Arts Center.

The group is a nonprofit organization dedicated to musical education for boys 7 to 18 years old.

Tickets, available at the door, cost $12 for adults or $8 for students.

‘Christmas Winds’ blow into Freeport

FREEPORT — The Pine Tree Coastal Winds, a community concert band, will present a concert titled “Christmas Winds” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Harraseeket Grange Hall, 13 Elm St.

Admission is by a cash donation to the band for music or a food item for donation to the Freeport Community Services Food Pantry.

‘Glass Menagerie’ auditions set for Saturday

FREEPORT — The Freeport Factory Stage will hold auditions for its production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 5 Depot St.

Director Jeri Pitcher seeks actors to fill the following roles:

— Tom Wingfield, a dreamer in his late 20s or early 30s who is haunted by the memory of his mother and sister.

— Laura Wingfield, who should appear in her late 20s, is lovely, soft, lives in an illusory world.

— Gentleman Caller, in his late 20s or early 30s, is down-to-earth, jovial, attractive and the most realistic character in the play.

Those who audition should prepare one or two contemporary monologues, not longer than four minutes in total.
