Woolwich Central boys in 4-0 start

WOOLWICH — The Woolwich Central School boys basketball team is off to a 4-0 start with a victory margin of 35 points.

Woolwich started out with a 72-22 win over Hope Elementary with quarterly scores of 6- 6, 48-18 and 72-22.

Henry Geoffrion had 24 points and 10 rebounds, Zack Fifield 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Dakota Freeman 17 points and seven steals.

Woolwich nipped Richmond 36-35, trailing 13-8 and 18-17 after two quarters, but leading 30-21 after three.

Richmond’s top scorer was Cody Tribbett with 11.

The leadership of Jacob Cressey and Geoffrion, and the tough defense by Tyler Young and Jake Reno, helped push Woolwich.

The third game was against Appleton at home with Woolwich leading 26-8, 38-13 and 58- 19, en route to a 74-26 win.

Geoffrion had 18 points, Fifield 16, Freeman 12, Cressey 11, Young eight and Jeremy Thiboutot five.

Woolwich also beat Islesboro 56-18 with Geoffrion getting 22 points and 14 rebounds and Fifield with 16 points, 15 rebounds and eight steals. Casey Rattleff and Evan Parsons were big contributors throughout.

Woolwich girls 3-1 in hoops

WOOLWICH — The Woolwich Central School girls basketball team is off to a 3-1 start.

Woolwich opened at Hope with a final score of 52-10. Emma Harrington had 16 points and Madeline Suhr 10.

The second game went to Richmond as Woolwich fell short, 26-15. Harrington had seven points. Richmond’s Kayla Patterson had 14 points and Meranda Martin eight. Richmond led 8-4, 10-6 and 22-9 at the quarter breaks.

Woolwich beat Appleton, 63- 11. Harrington had 22 points, Jasmine Thibodeau and Brooke McElman eight each, and Suhr and Pearl Wilson six each.

Against Islesboro, Woolwich prevailed 47-5 with Harrington netting 12, Thibodeau eight, and Mackenzie Johnston and McElman six each. In all the games the defensive team played exceptionally well.

WCS travels to Nobleboro this Friday.

Bowdoin women’s squash take two

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bowdoin College women’s squash team picked up a pair of wins at the Trinity Round Robin last weekend, while the men earned a single win as the teams concluded their prebreak schedule. The women’s team will go into winter break with a 3-2 record while the men stand at 3-3.

This past weekend, the women rebounded from a Friday loss to George Washington, 8-1, to bounce Connecticut College, 7-2, and Vassar, 9-0. The men lost to George Washington, 8-1, and Connecticut College, 6-3, before sweeping Vassar 9-0.

Alden Drake shined for the Bowdoin women, leading the way with three victories against no defeats in the trio of matches. Playing at the No. 4 spot in the ladder, Drake won a hard-fought 3-2 battle on Friday against GW before sweeping her matches against Conn and Vassar.

Barrett Takesian also collected the hat trick for the men’s team. Playing at the No. 3 position, Takesian was the lone Polar Bear to earn a point in Friday’s loss to GW and lost just a single set all weekend.

The Bowdoin men are currently ranked 18th in the latest College Squash Association National Poll, while the Bowdoin women stand 20th.

Men’s basketball rolls past MMA

CASTINE, Maine — The Bowdoin College men’s basketball team scored the first 15 points of the game and were never challenged in a 72-44 nonconference win over Maine Maritime Academy on Monday evening.

The Polar Bears rolled to their second consecutive win and improved to 5-2, while the Mariners fell to 1-5. Bowdoin will close out its first semester slate with non-NESCAC games against two of its biggest rivals. The Polar Bears will be at Colby Friday in Waterville (7 p.m.) and at home Sunday against Bates (1 p.m.).

Will Hanley scored a gamehigh 20 points with seven rebounds for Bowdoin. Wyatt Littles added 12 off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting as 11 different Polar Bears scored in the win. Bowdoin held a 45-30 edge on the glass and connected on 53.7 percent of its shots (29-of-54).

A three-point play by Ryan O’Connell and a 3-pointer from Bryan Hurley sparked the early 15-0 run by the Polar Bears. Bowdoin completely dominated the first half, holding a lead of 37-7 at one point before settling for a 46-21 edge at intermission.

Maine Maritime’s Shawn Dostie of Bowdoinham had 12 points and nine rebounds.

UMaine’s Abbott Player of the Week

ORONO — University of Maine men’s ice hockey assistant captain Spencer Abbott was named the Hockey East Athletic Republic Player of the Week on Monday, Dec. 5.

Abbott scored nine points in Maine’s weekend sweep at Vermont as the Black Bears evened their record of 6-6-2 on the season and 5-5-1 in Hockey East play.

Abbott recorded his first career hat trick in Maine’s 6-4 win over the Catamounts on Saturday night. He also finished the night with two assists for five points. In the game, Abbott became the 51st player in Maine history to tally 100 career points.

He followed that performance by scoring two goals and adding two assists on Saturday at Vermont. Abbott, who scored both game-winning goals on the weekend, had a part in nine of Maine’s 11 goals.

He currently has 43 goals and 64 assists for 107 points in 126 career games played.

Abbott and the Black Bears return to action on Saturday when they host Boston University at 7:30 p.m. at Alfond Arena.

Claire Baecher NESCAC’s best

HADLEY, MA — Williams College junior Claire Baecher of Brunswick was chosen as the NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for play ending on Sunday.

Baecher took home MVP accolades at the Williams Holiday Classic as she led the undefeated Ephs to wins over Bridgewater St. and Daemen with 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.0 blocks per game.

She made 16-of-28 attempts from the floor (.571) and 11-of-14 from the foul line (.786). Baecher had a career-high 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting along with 10 boards in Friday’s 89-63 victory over Bridgewater St.

Saturday against Daemen, Baecher scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, had nine blocks and stole the ball three times in a 71-45 victory. It was her second game this season with nine blocks.

Currently, Beacher leads the Ephs — and the conference — with 18.8 points per game. She is sixth in rebounding, third in FG percentage and first in blocks with 30.

Brunswick seventh boys top Oak Hill

BRUNSWICK — The Brunswick Junior High boys seventh-grade basketball team opened up its season with a 48-7 win over Oak Hill Junior High.

Brunswick displayed a pressure defense that caused numerous turnovers. The Huskies shot 42 percent from the floor, while holding its opponent to 20 percent.

The Huskies were led by Josh Dorr and Nate Beniot with 10 and eight points, respectively. They also controled the boards with Austin Phillips hauling down nine for the game.

Brunswick is scheduled to play its next three games at home with Bath Middle School coming in on Monday.

St. John’s girls open with a loss

BRUNSWICK — The St. John’s School girls basketball team came up short on Monday against Raymond, 42-38.

Down by 16 points in the fourth quarter, St. John’s pressed, led by Brooke Howard (17 points), Mikayla Pietkiewicz (10) and Anne McManis (sixs) nearly erased the deficit by scoring 17 points and holding Raymond to only six.

Raymond’s offense was led by Maelah Nadeau (10 points), while Nataley Jefferies and Abby Gord both had eight.

Defensively for St. John’s, Celeste Styrniolo and Clair Reid were standouts.

Bowdoin women back on track

BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team broke its brief twogame losing streak in a big way on Tuesday evening, defeating Husson 99-64 in a non-conference tilt at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears (4-2), who struggled from the field in consecutive road losses, bounced back in the friendly confines of Morrell Gym, connecting on 68 percent of their shots in the opening half and setting a program record with 66 first-half points en route to the win.

Bowdoin was led by a careerhigh 25 points from Ellery Gould, who broke her previous career high of 20 scored against Husson in her freshman season. Gould also had six steals and five assists in the win.

Jill Henrikson (16 points, seven rebounds), Allie Piscina (15 points, three steals) and Amy Hackett (11 points) also reached double figures for the Polar Bears.

The 66 points by intermission shattered the previous points-ina half mark of 55 set in 1978 against Thomas College.

The Polar Bears will host a non-conference game against rival Bates on Thursday at Morrell Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

Another tough final frame for Bears

GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine men’s ice hockey team scored three times in the final period to rally past Bowdoin on Tuesday evening, 3-1.

The Polar Bears dropped their second straight game and fell to 3-3-1.

Ollie Koo got Bowdoin on the board with his first goal of the season at 3:03, with rookies John McGinnis and Tim Coffey earning assists on the power play goal.

After a scoreless second frame, the Huskies evened the score on a power-play goal of their own at 4:58 of the third period courtesy of Angelo Vrachnas.

Jon Grandinetti put USM ahead for good on a goal with just 2:04 remaining. After a Bowdoin timeout, Ryan Seward deposited an empty-netter to seal the win for USM.
