BRUNSWICK — Allie Spinney turned aside 53 of 54 shots as the Cheverus girls hockey team defeated Brunswick 5-1 in a high school contest at Sidney J. Watson Arena on Monday.

“It was the strangest game I have ever seen, with us pretty much all over them,” said Brunswick coach Bill Bodwell, whose team is 0-1-1 and visits Winslow on Wednesday at Sukee Arena (4:30 p.m.). “This is two games now where I felt we were the better team. We had so many chances to score. We just didn’t finish.”

Dana Maloney opened the scoring for the Stags four minutes into the contest off an assist from Alex Logan.

Katie Roy scored three consecutive goals for Cheverus (1- 0) for a 4-0 lead after two periods.

Suzannah Smith, from Annie Kelly, put Brunswick on the board just 14 seconds into the third period, but Spinney made several spectacular saves down the stretch to keep the Dragons from getting closer.

Emily Rodrigue, assisted by Roy, finished off the scoring.

Erin Gay and Clare Mendes combined on nine saves for Brunswick.
