BRUNSWICK — The U. S. Under-18 National team edged Bowdoin College in an exhibition men’s ice hockey game at Watson Arena on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, to conclude the 2011 Bowdoin/Colby Faceoff Classic.
After Bowdoin killed consecutive penalties early in the first period, the U- 18 team scored off a Brendan Silk shot that deflected off a Bowdoin player and past goaltender Steve Messina at 13:57.
The Polar Bears answered on the power play at 15:55, as John McGinnis slid a pass through the crease to classmate Danny Palumbo on the doorstep.
After Messina stopped the first six shots he saw to open the second frame, the U-18s regained its one- goal edge when Nicholas Kerdiles fed Patrick Sieloff in front. Sieloff slid the puck through the pads of Messina at 9:20 to make it 2-1.
Bowdoin outshot Team USA 12-8 in the final frame, but failed to find the gametying goal as Jared Rutledge stopped all dozen shots he saw in the last period.
Steve Messina was outstanding in net for Bowdoin, collecting 33 saves in goal, including several sprawling stops. Rutledge finished with 24 saves for the U-18 team.
The Polar Bears converted on 1-of-4 power-play opportunities, while the U-18s failed to convert on six man- up chances.
Bowdoin returns to action with a pair of games against rival Colby. The Polar Bears head to Waterville to take on the Mules on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning to Watson Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
On Saturday at Colby College, Bowdoin scored three times in the second period of a 5-2 win against Salve Regina in the opening day of the Faceoff Classic.
Tim McGarry scored twice for the Polar Bears. He opened the scoring at 18:44 of the first period, then added an empty-netter at 19:40 of the third to seal the win.
Robert Toczylowski, Donald Chute and Harry Matheson all scored second period tallies to give Bowdoin a 4-1 edge entering the final frame.
John Scorcia and Chad Goodwin had Salve Regina’s goals. Ryan Collier and Jordan Lalor had two assists each for Bowdoin.
Richard Nerland collected 16 saves for the Polar Bears, while Mike McDonald stopped 32 for the Seahawks.
Men’s basketball
Six Bowdoin players saw double figures as the Polar Bears took an easy 95-54 nonconference win at Husson on Sunday afternoon.
Bowdoin improved to 3- 1 and will travel to Gorham for another non-conference tilt against the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Husson fell to 0-3.
The Polar Bears were paced by another double- double from Will Hanley, who collected 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Ryan O’Connell also scored 16 points. Andrew Madlinger nailed three 3- pointers and finished with 15 points, while Maximilian Staiger added 10 points.
Bowdoin’s bench also contributed heavily as Bryan Hurley pitched in 13 points and Wyatt Littles added 10.
Marc Zaharchuk of Richmond led Husson with 21 points in the loss.
Bowdoin never trailed on Sunday and, after being tied at 12-12 at the 14-minute mark of the first half, closed the period on a 33-13 surge to take a 45-25 edge at intermission.
Husson closed to within 15 points with 14:39 left in regulation, but a Madlinger jumper and Hurley trifecta sparked a 15-0 run to put the contest out of reach.
The Polar Bears connected on 53 percent ( 35- of- 66) of their shots from the field and 47 percent (9-of-19) from longrange.
Women’s ice hockey
Bowdoin picked up its first point of the season in a 5-5 deadlock at Division I Holy Cross on Saturday evening.
The Polar Bears stand at 0- 1-1 after giving Holy Cross (7- 0-1) its first blemish of the season.
Kendra Sweet had two goals for Bowdoin, which also received tallies from Stephanie Ludy, Kayte Holtz and Shelagh Merrill. Dominique Lozzi and Chelsea MacNeil had two assists each.
The Polar Bears scored three times in the opening period, thanks to markers from Merrill, Ludy and Sweet, who upped Bowdoin’s lead to 4-2 early in the second period.
But, Holy Cross rebounded with a power play and a shorthanded tally early in the third to tie the game.
Holtz regained the advantage for Bowdoin with a score with 18: 07 remaining, but Holy Cross scored with an extra attacker with just 44 seconds left to force overtime.
Bowdoin’s Sage Santangelo stopped 15 shots and allowed three goals in 40 minutes before giving way to Tara Connolly, who made 14 saves over the final 25 minutes.
