VASSALBORO — Police have charged a seventh grader at Vassalboro Community School with setting a fire Monday that damaged the inside of a girls’ bathroom.
The 13-year-old girl was issued a summons today charging her with arson, said Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steven McCausland.
The girl, whose name was not released by police because of her age, was released to the custody of her parents. She is expected to appear in juvenile court in February.
Police believe the girl set the fire shortly before 1 p.m. It forced the evacuation of the school’s roughly 500 kindergarten through eighth-grade students.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which started in a toilet paper dispenser, but the bathroom was left with smoke and water damage.
No injuries were reported.
