In a mock election held Nov. 1, teachers and students on Wiscasset High School’s student council split on whether the town should consider leaving Regional School Unit 12.
On that question, 80 percent of the 55-member student council voted that the town should move ahead with consideration of withdrawal from the regional school district that Wiscasset shares with seven other communities. Of seven teachers, five voted in opposition of that question; two voted in favor.
The student council also cast votes on all of the local and statewide ballot questions that Wiscasset voters will face in Tuesday’s election
Local questions
— Shall the town vote to appropriate the sum of $5,000, the entire amount to come from impact fees for Wastewater System capital expenses?
Students: 45, yes; 15 no. Teachers: 7, yes; 0, no.
Statewide questions
— Do you want to reject the section of Chapter 399 of the Public Laws of 2011 that requires new voters to register to vote at least two business days prior to an election?
Students: 31, yes; 23, no. Teachers: 5, yes; 2 no.
— Do you want to allow a slot machine facility at a harness racing track in Biddeford or another community within 25 miles of Scarborough Downs, subject to local approval, and at a harness racing track in Washington County, with part of the profits from these facilities going to support specific state and local programs?
Students: 38, yes; 17, no. Teachers: 2, yes; 5, no.
— Do you want to allow a casino with table games and slot machines in Lewiston, with part of the profits going to support specific state and local programs?
Students: 38, yes; 15, no. Teachers: 2, yes; 5, no.
— Do you favor amending the Constitution of Maine to change the years of redistricting the Maine Legislature, congressional districts and county commissioner districts after 2013 from 2023 and every 10th year thereafter to 2021, and every 10th year thereafter?
Students: 18, yes; 33, no. Teachers: 5, yes; 2, no.
