Best-selling author to visit Hyde School on Oct. 30
Best-selling author Douglas Preston will visit Hyde School on Oct. 30 to discuss the finer points of writing as part of a writer’s workshop.
The class, which will meet first in the fall and continue through April, is for students who want to launch a major writing project such as a novel, novella, memoir, or work of poetry. The hands-on seminar will be limited to juniors and seniors interested in publishing their work.
Preston has written 27 books, both fiction and nonfiction. His last novel, “Cold Vengeance,” reached No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list. Preston also writes for The New Yorker, Atlantic, Smithsonian and National Geographic. He has taught writing at Princeton University.

Hrehovcik’s view of bridge available at Harvest Fest
Reproductions of artist Steve Hrehovcik’s ink and pastel drawing of the new bridge over the Mousam River in Kennebunk will be sold Saturday at the annual Harvest Fest.
When the Maine Department of Transportation decided to replace the old bridge, Hrehovcik thought the new bridge would be an excellent subject for a colorful drawing.
His drawing shows a long perspective view of Main Street from the southern end of the bridge. .
The bridge will open Oct. 31.

Printmaking fellowships awarded to three artists
Circling the Square Fine Art Press awarded printmaking fellowship grants to artists Martha Briana of Northport, Jeffrey Chapman of Gardiner and Russ Gilchrist of Topsham.
With the sponsorship of the J.W. Robinson Welfare Trust, Briana and Chapman will pursue independent printmaking projects for the next 10 months at Circling the Square. Prints produced during their fellowship will be exhibited at Circling the Square’s downtown gallery in 2012.
Through the sponsorship of Kennebec Savings Bank, Gilchrist was awarded a two-month membership to the press to further explore his printmaking interests.
Gilchrist and Chapman studied with master printmaker Karen Adrienne, founder, owner, and director of Circling the Square Fine Art Press and art professor at the University of Maine at Augusta.

Results of the jurying process for the ArtinMe. exhibition at Boothbay Region Art Foundation have been announced.
The Knickerbocker Group First Place and Best of Show Award was given to Debra Arter of Damariscotta for her assemblage “Day In and Day Out.”
The Sherman’s Books and Stationery Award went to Jay Sawyer of Warren for his round welded sculpture “Feelin’ Lucky.”
The John Edwards Jewelry & Design Award went to Svetlana Beattie of Augusta for her large oil painting “Tsunami.”
Honorable mentions went to Diana Young of Bangor, Brandon Lutterman of Wiscasset and Wendy Newcomb of Sebago.
Judges were Lois Dodd, Nancy Wissemann Widrig and John Wissemann.

Noyes to serve on board of Center for Creativity
Mary Noyes of Freeport has been appointed to the Maine Center for Creativity’s board to assist in long-range planning for the organization, fiscal management with funders and donors, and general program plans.
Noyes serves on several boards in Maine and Colorado, including Coastal Studies for Girls, Portland Ovations, True North, and Steadman Phillippon Research Institute.
Noyes, a Skidmore College graduate and mother of two, has 22 years of experience in sales and marketing and was part owner of Aircast Inc., a health care equipment and supply company.
She enjoys sports, music and spending time with her daughters.

Dahlov Ipcar wins award for ‘Farmyard Alphabet’
Dahlov Ipcar’s new board book has been honored with a bronze medal in the Board Book category of the 2011 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards. “Dahlov Ipcar’s Farmyard Alphabet” pairs original verses with timeless illustrations from 11 of the artist’s previous books, many of which are now out of print. Ipcar’s artwork and texts celebrate farm life. The book also received honorary mention for best children’s book in the 2011 Maine Literary Awards.
This marks the second year an Islandport Press children’s book has won a Moonbeam Award. Last year, “The Fish House Door” by Robert Baldwin and Astrid Sheckels received the gold medal in the Picture Book category.
