NEWPORT — A man was found bleeding from a stab wound to the chest at a gas station early Wednesday morning, police said.

No one had been charged in connection with the stabbing, which investigators believe occurred in Bangor, according to Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid. Macdaid identified the stabbing victim as Jonathan Lehman, whose age and address were unknown to authorities.

“At this point, we believe it took place in Bangor, but it’s still sketchy how he ended up in Newport,” Macdaid said. “We’re getting all kinds of different stories.”

Macdaid said Newport police got a call about 7:20 a.m. reporting the stabbing victim at the Irving Big Stop gas station off Moosehead Trail. Police found Lehman lying on the ground and bleeding, Macdaid said.

A woman who was with Lehman, Shauna Smart, 37, of St. Albans, was arrested on charges of possessing scheduled drugs and violating conditions of release.

Lehman was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield and was later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. A medical center spokesman said late Wednesday afternoon that the hospital had no information available on Lehman or his condition.

Macdaid said police continue to investigate and are trying to piece together what happened. Lehman and Smart provided police with different stories of how the stabbing occurred, Macdaid said.

In a news release, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said the stabbing was being investigated, as was another stabbing of a man dropped off at Eastern Maine Medical Center about 5:15 a.m. It’s unclear if the two stabbings were connected.

Members of the Bangor Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division were investigating both incidents, Edwards said.

Newport police, meanwhile, filed the charges against Smart after she was found with an opium-like drug, Macdaid said.

“It was a hard substance and it will be sent to the lab for testing,” Macdaid said.

Smart also faces drug charges in connection with an incident that happened Monday in Dexter, according to Dexter Police Chief Jim Emerson. She was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, Emerson said.

Police are still awaiting test results, but suspect that Smart possessed cocaine and bath salts, a synthetic hallucinogenic drug.

“She was in a vehicle at a convenience store and she was acting very strange,” Emerson said. “An ambulance took her away.” He said she was arrested and bailed out and her car was impounded.
