AUGUSTA — Mainers get their say this week on competing congressional redistricting proposals after Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on a compromise.

The original GOP plan would have shifted the voting districts of 300,000 people and moved Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree of North Haven to the 2nd District, while the Democratic proposal would have moved one town, Vassalboro, from the 1st to the 2nd District.

Late last week, both parties offered revised proposals, including a GOP plan that would let Pingree remain in the 1st District. But there was no agreement.

Tuesday’s public hearing will be held at the State House.

The Legislature set an Aug. 31 deadline for the Reapportionment Commission to submit a plan; a special legislative session will take up the proposal Sept. 27.
