A Canadian sailboat that was disabled east of Mount Desert Island was rescued yesterday by a U.S. Coast Guard crew based in Southwest Harbor.
The sailboat Excalibur called the Coast Guard yesterday morning to report that they were contending with rough seas. At 12:10 they radioed again that their boom had broken and the boat was taking on water. Listen to the distress call.
When the Coast Guard crew arrived at the scene they found seas of 8-10 feet and winds at 35 to 45 knots. The boat was towed to Manset. There were no injuries.
Coast Guard command duty officer Chief Petty Officer Matthew Couling noted “Because of the sailor’s good judgment to let us know they were having difficulties, we were able to keep close tabs on the boat which enabled us to respond quicker when their situation deteriorated.”
