FRYEBURG — Barbecue enthusiasts flocked to the Fryeburg Fairgrounds today for the first Western Maine BBQ Festival.
The festival, continuing through 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, features taste testing of chicken, sausage, beef and pork from some 40 teams and serious barbecue competition. Presented by the Denmark Lions Club to benefit local Lions Clubs and the community’s they serve, the competition is expected to award a total of $12,500 in prizes.
But with team names like “Darth Que,” “Just Got Smoked,” The Devine Swine,” and “Yabba Dabba Que!” it is obvious everyone is cooking up some fun.
“Barbecue in and of itself is about camaraderie,” Bill Sanborn of the Denmark Lions Club said. “Forty teams out here all want the prize, but they’re all happy to see each other succeed.”
