There is one word on every Mainer’s mind right now — hot.
And we may not see relief from the heat for a couple days.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Kistner said today’s highs are expected to range from 90 to 95. He said the heat and humidity will continue through tonight with highs around 90 again on Friday.
Relief may come Saturday with a front expected to roll through that could bring some showers or thunderstorms, Kistner said. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to be around 80 for a high.
The Maine Bureau of Air Quality is forecasting poor air quality through tonight for coastal areas between Kittery and Acadia National Park. Kistner said this could make breathing difficult for children and elderly, those with heart and lung problems, or even healthy adults who are being physically active.
The Maine Center for Disease Control is advising everyone to take precautions to prevent heat illness. This includes staying in air conditioned areas or keep cool with open windows, fans and loose, lightweight clothing. The CDC also recommends drinking more fluids, but avoiding alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, taking breaks from necessary physical activity and avoiding strenuous activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest part of the day.
