Four people were injured, two critically, when a small private plane crashed in the water just after taking off from Matinicus Airport this evening.
The plane crashed at about 6 p.m. about 150 yards off shore and all four people on board were recovered by a nearby fishing boat, said a release from the Coast Guard. They were taken to Matinicus Island, then transported to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockland.
The two most seriously injured passengers were then flown by Lifeflight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The crash and its cause are under investigation.
