Local architect and chocolatier Dean Bingham has won a 2011 Restaurant Design Award for his design of Grace restaurant at 15 Chestnut St.

The awards are sponsored by the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Bingham preserved much of the historical character of the building, which had been a church since the 1860s before it was converted into a restaurant by Anne and Peter Verrill.

The restaurant has vaulted ceilings, a kitchen near the old altar, 27 original stained-glass windows and a pulpit that is now used as a hostess stand.

Bingham is also known as the chocolatier behind Dean’s Sweets at 82 Middle St., where he produces award-winning handmade chocolate truffles and caramels.
