AUGUSTA — A newly enacted law that ends Maine’s Election Day voter registration policy is being challenged.
Opponents say they filed a challenge today with the Secretary of State’s Office seeking a people’s veto vote on whether to repeal the law.
League of Women Voters of Maine President Barbara McDade says same-day voter registration has been part of Maine elections for 38 years and has helped almost 70,000 people participate during the last two general elections.
Supporters of the law say same-day registration overburdens municipal clerks with paperwork as elections are being held.
In order for the people’s veto question to go to voters, signatures totaling 10 percent of the votes cast for governor in 2010 must be submitted.
