PORTLAND — Thousands turned out this morning for the Portland International Jetport’s Aeronautical Expo.

The expo, running until 4 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, features dozens of aircraft. Attendees can get an up-close look at current military planes and helicopters as well as historical aircraft.

Those interested could pay for rides in helicopters or a bi-plane. Demonstrations by the Chuting Eagles Powered Parachute Team and radio-controlled aircraft had people tilting their heads to the sky.

One of today’s big events was the annual MS Society of Maine “Plane Pull.” A total of 19 teams competed to see who could pull a Fed Ex Boeing 757 over a span of 12 feet the fastest.

A team from Time Warner Cable won for fastest pull, coming in at 5.059 seconds. The teams raised about $25,000 for the MS Society of Maine, according to jetport Marketing Manager Greg Hughes

A U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bomber is also expected to make a low, slow fly-by between 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. today, Hughes said.
