It’s safe to say that Bruins Fever has swept through New England affecting just about every sports fan who usually settles in for the beginning of a long Boston Red Sox season.
It is affecting men, women and children as the fevers grow, and more and more New Englanders suffer from this incurable infection.
It makes sane people insane. It makes normal people eccentric. It is a ravenous condition that makes one bleed black and gold.
If a person isn’t sure that they have the fever, then look for some simple symptoms such as the inability to go to the grocery store without forechecking other customers into the shelves. Look to see if you crave the cold ice instead of the humid summer weather. If you have a sudden and intense hatred of a western Canadian city known as Vancouver, coupled with these other symptoms, then you might have Bruins fever.
The fever, however, will also make you do unexpected things, especially if you are a kid named Garett Dion.
Dion has the bug.
The 13-year-old sufferer of Bruins Fever last week couldn’t control his symptoms and painted a large Bruins logo on his parents’ lawn in Lyman.
Classic case of the condition.
Although the lawn painting is a symptom of this rare condition that hasn’t shown signs since 1990 – the last time the Bruins were in the Stanley Cup ”“ Dion is suffering from a severe strain of the fever.
He painted the lawn, his concerned mother Holly Dion said, but won’t allow the lawn to be mowed until after the Stanley Cup series is finished, she said.
“My son Garett loves hockey and is a loyal Bruins fan,” Holly said. “He worked hard last Thursday night painting our lawn to show his support for the team.”
Loyal Bruins fans seem to be the most susceptible to this seemingly incurable condition.
On Monday night, the Bruins finally won a game in the series beating the Vancouver Canucks 8-1. Careful, this win will exacerbate the fever, make it grow and no one knows the effects that could be felt.
The Bruins play Game 4 Wednesday night again in Boston. Watchful eyes will be on the fans of the team and those hundreds of thousands of New Englanders who have the fevered condition. If the Bruins win Game 4, it could grow form an epidemic to a pandemic. The Dion’s lawn could grow out of control.
Fortunately for New England, the fever is a welcomed condition. Catching it will not physically hurt you. It will, however, unite you with other sufferers in a way that Red Sox Nation united in that fateful 2004 fall when the team rose up and took down the Evil Empire known as the New York Yankees before winning its first World Series title in 86 years.
Now, the Bruins have a chance to affect New England in the same way as they prepare for Game 4 and a chance to even the series.
So, sit back, wash your hands and be prepared to contract the best fever you can ever have.
