Members of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee are meeting today to continue work on the state’s two-year, $6.1 billion budget.
This afternoon, the committee is reviewing language relative to cost of living freezes for state employees and teachers. Also, members are discussing how the freeze would work in the second and third years, when there are supposed to be funds available to be paid out to retirees.
Sen. Richard Rosen, R-Bucksport, presented language to create a study group to examine switching future state workers and teachers to a Social Security based system, possibly with an extra state retirement plan layered on top of it.
Talks are expected to resume throughout the day and into the night. The committee is working to finish the entire budget this weekend.
