AUGUSTA – The Maine Senate voted overwhelmingly against providing a $1,000 income tax credit to parents who send their children to private schools.

The vote effectively kills the legislation, which was passed yesterday in the Maine House. The proposal, sponsored by state Sen. Roger Sherman, R-Houlton, was projected to cost about $25 million in lost revenue over the next two years. The Senate had previously voted against the measure and voted 21-14 to stick with their decision.

The credit would have applied to private and religious schools.
