Hundreds of vintage cars are expected to roll out this weekend at the Owls Head Transportation Museums Ford & Chevy Car Meet & Antique Aeroplane Show.
While Ford and Chevy cars are highlighted, all pre-1991 make and model cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome, organizers say.
“What better weekend than Memorial Day to salute these iconic American brands,” Assistant Director Steve Hatch said in a release. “If you own an antique, classic or special interest vehicle — or you simply enjoy seeing them up close — this show is for you. We are expecting a great turnout, with vehicles from all over the state and beyond. It’s a great way to start the rally season.”
Jamie Dowling, a salesman at Rockland Ford, said he planned to bring his restored maroon ’36 Ford. The owner of nine cars, Dowling said he’s been going to car shows at the museum since they started in 1974.
“I’ve been going since I was 15,” said Dowling, now 53.
It’s the first of many auto shows planned this summer by the Owls Head Transportation Museums. They host a car show about every other weekend from May to October, according to spokesman Park Morrison.
“This is a great, nostalgic hobby and a great way for generations to connect,” Morrison said.
The youngest generation can bring their bikes, tricycles and scooters. A special kids section will be set up to show off their wheels, with special children’s activities.
Several of the 60-plus vehicles in the museums’ permanent collection will be on display, including a 1932 Chevrolet Confederate Roadster and a 1940 Ford Woodie Station Wagon.
Sponsors Fuller-Chevrolet-GMC and Rockland Ford will have displays of 2011 vehicles.
Weather permitting, there will be an air show featuring the museums’ planes. Among the activities are museum tours and free rides in Ford Model Ts.
Morrison said between 150 to 200 exhibitors are expected to attend.
“It’s time to dust off cars and get anxious for the summer weather,” Dowling said.
