MACHIAS  — Maine’s education commissioner is wrapping up a two-day visit to eastern Maine as part of his statewide “listening tour” to hear ideas about the state’s schools.

Stephen Bowen is visiting the Rose M. Gaffney Elementary School in Machias this morning, followed by an afternoon visit to the Beatrice Rafferty School on the Passamaquoddy Tribe’s Pleasant Point Reservation.

He’ll attend a public forum tonight in Calais to hear ideas on what can be done to better Maine’s education system. He was at a similar forum last night in Machias.

The stops are part of Bowen’s pledge to visit Maine’s nine superintendent districts in his first 100 days on the job to hear how things are going, what the Education Department can do better and how schools can improve.
