AUGUSTA — There will be no major changes to the state’s bottle redemption law, following votes today by the Legislature’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
The committee killed six bills that would have made changes to the law, but passed one measure that is designed to help small distributors get commingling agreements. The committee also voted to direct the Department of Agriculture to make rules regarding the number of redemption centers, the size of centers and regulations regarding plastic bags.
In addition, the bill that’s moving forward, LD 1324, has been amended to give redemption centers the power to bring a civil action against those who are found in possession of more than 48 beverage containers that were not sold in Maine.
The bill now heads to the House and Senate for consideration.
