AUGUSTA — The advisory staff of Maine’s Public Utilities Commission released a report Thursday proposing that residential and small commercial electricity customers be given the choice to “opt out” of Central Maine Power’s smart meter initiative.

Under the proposal, consumers who opt out can pick between an old, mechanical meter or a smart meter configured so that it does not transmit data — the so called “transmitter-off option.”

The change would not be free. Customers who chose old meters would pay $40 up front and $12 per month. Those who chose the transmitter-off option would pay an initial $20 and a monthly fee of $10.50
