Amid conflicting reports of the employment status of its executive director, the board of the Maine Turnpike Authority was meeting this morning in executive session to discuss a personnel matter.

Board Chairman Gerard Conley, Sr., said he expected the session to be brief. This morning’s meeting was a continuation of a two-hour executive session late Friday. After Friday’s meeting, a spokesman said the MTA would hold a public meeting after today’s executive session.

On Friday, the Maine Republican Party issued a news release saying MTA Executive Director Miket Violette planned to step down this week. At the same time, WMTW-TV, citing a legislative source, reported that the longtime director had resigned and cleaned out his desk Thursday.

MTA spokesman Scott Tompkins said Friday that Violette had not resigned. Violette did not return calls for comment.

Violette, who has led the quasi-state agency for 23 years, has come under fire from Republicans for the authority’s spending practices in recent years.
