PORTLAND — Portland police are asking for the public’s assistance in their search for a suspect who clobbered a convenience store clerk in the head before making off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register this morning.
Lt. Gary Rogers said the suspect, a black male in his late 30s or mid 40s, entered the Big Apple convenience store on Park Avenue around 4 a.m.
When the clerk turned his back to the man, the suspect smacked the clerk in the back of the head with an unknown object. The clerk fell to the floor, and the robber removed cash from the register. He then fled on foot.
The clerk had to be taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center with a non-life-threatening injury.
Rogers described the suspect as between 5-foot-10 and 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black jacket, jeans, and a black winter hat.
