The organizers of the annual La Kermesse Franco-American festival are hoping to continue their comeback this year and have mentioned some crowd-pleasing concepts. What could be more pleasing than free admission to most of its events, for instance.
Other interesting changes are on the table as well, including one that should have been tried years ago ”“ making the festival a two-city event with collaboration from Saco.
After a series of financial and organizational blows, organizers struggled to put on last year’s festival. They deserve credit for pulling things together and creating the opportunity to reinvent La Kermesse this year ”“ its 29th.
The formula has long been successful. And the plan for this year’s Biddeford-Saco fair will include two major events that have been greatly missed ”“ the festive kickoff parade, and the downtown block party with entertainment, commercial vendors and fireworks.
Franco performers and food are expected to be back this year along with popular features like the “Idol” singing competition and a beer tent.
The most promising innovation is the plan to hold the entire festival on the downtown streets of Biddeford and Saco. It could bring healthy traffic to a district that needs it, and provide an opportunity for community collaboration. La Kermesse organizers are already hearing promises of support from city officials.
Of course, none of these plans for a June festival are a sure thing, even with spring just around the corner. Organizers are now pursuing the vital work of fund-raising.
We hope they find strong backing from beyond the Franco-American community. La Kermesse is a vibrant and durable community event that ought to be strengthened by a broader base of support.
