AUGUSTA – Lawmakers voted to put off a vote on whether or not to legalize fireworks during a meeting on Monday.
Concerns had been raised by the LePage administration that the measure proposed by state Rep. Douglas Damon, R-Bangor, was overly broad, though it is supportive of making some fireworks legal.
Several committee members said they were concerned about the costs related to regulating and coping with an increased amount of fires that would likely be caused.
Representatives from the Department of Public Safety and the state Fire Marshal’s Office are expected to work with Damon and others on refining his proposal. The new measure would be brought back to the committee for a vote later in the session.
