SACO — Jake Gross had three goals and an assist Monday as Scarborough clinched a berth in the Western Class A boys’ hockey tournament with an 8-1 victory against Portland at MHG Arena.
Scarborough was ranked eighth and Portland ninth entering the regular-season finale, with the top eight making the tournament. The Red Storm (9-9) not only kept the Bulldogs (6-12) out of the postseason but jumped over South Portland to finish seventh and avoid a first-round game against undefeated Biddeford.
Scarborough also got two goals and three assists from Zach Pettingill, and a goal and an assist from Brian McKeown.
Eddie Apon scored for Portland after 21 seconds of the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1.
FALMOUTH 5, GREELY 1: Nick Samaras and Ben Freeman each scored twice to lift the Yachtsmen (9-6-3) over the Rangers (14-3-1) at Family Ice Center.
Freeman also had an assist, and Kris Samaras assisted on both of his brother’s goals. Cam Bell scored the other Falmouth goal.
Devyn Rogers tied the game at 1-1 late in the second period, but Samaras and Bell connected in a 38-second span to make it 3-1 heading into the third.
Falmouth goalie Dane Pauls stopped 31 shots.
THORNTON ACADEMY 5, ST. DOM’S 0: CJ Maksut finished with two goals and an assist, and Andrew Carignan added a goal and an assist to lead the Trojans (13-5) past the Saints (12-4-2) at the Colisee.
Jay Finch finished with 20 saves and extended his scoreless streak to 11 periods.
DEERING 2, CHEVERUS 0: Griffin Py scored both goals and Jackson Stevens made 43 saves as the Rams (10-8) blanked the Stags (10-8) at Portland Ice Arena.
Taylor Py and Connor Petropolous each had an assist.
Cheverus goaltender Mike Haas-Zanghi made 33 saves.
