Mary Mayhew of South China, was approved to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, and Walt Whitcomb, of Waldo, to lead the Department of Agriculture.
Several Democrats spoke out against Mayhew’s nomination, calling her unqualified to lead the state’s largest agency. Mayhew is a former lobbyist for the Maine Hospital Association. Democrats said she lacked budgetary and managerial skills, as well as social service experience.
Mayhew was confirmed by 26 votes to 8. Whitcomb received a unanimous vote.
