Born: Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta.
Education:
• Entered Morehouse College in Atlanta at age 15.
• Divinity degree, Crozer Theological Seminary, Chester, Pa.
• Ph.D. in theology, Boston University, 1955
Civil rights accomplishments:
• Founded Southern Christian Leadership Conference, 1957
• Organized 1963 March on Washington, where he gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech
• Received Nobel Peace Prize, 1964, for his work as a civil rights leader
Assassination:
• Shot and killed in Memphis, Tenn., April 4, 1968. He is buried in Atlanta.
