SHAPLEIGH — A volunteer firefighter who was on his way to a rescue call died Monday in a single vehicle crash on Shapleigh Corner Road.
David Remington Sr., 58, who had been a member of the Shapleigh Fire Department for the past four years, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Maj. William King of the York County Sheriff’s Office.
Remington, who lived nearby in Acton, was responding to a call of a car crash on Owl’s Nest Road in Shapleigh when he lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet pick-up truck on Shapleigh Corner Road, about a mile from Route 109, said King. Remington’s truck rolled over and he was ejected from the vehicle.
The crash took place at about 10 p.m.
Shapleigh Fire Chief Duane Romano said Remington had retired from the Portland Fire Department some years ago and joined Shapleigh Fire Department when he moved nearby.
“He was well-known,” said Romano. “He was well-liked and he’d help anyone. He loved the fire department. He never missed a call.”
Shapleigh Fire Department officials were scheduled to issue a further statement later this morning.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. South Berwick Police Officer David Ruger, an accident reconstructionist, is assisting the sheriff’s office, said King.
Sheriff Maurice Ouellette this morning said Remington’s vehicle will be examined as part of the investigation.
