Many people enjoy discovering, using and improving local trails. The Eastern Trail Alliance pursues these goals in a big way.
Over the past 14 years it has labored to link separate trails into a cycling and hiking artery between Portland and Kittery, following the right-of-way once used by the Eastern Division of the Boston & Maine Railroad. The Eastern Trail revises perceptions of the area’s geography by revealing unexpected routes from one point to another.
It will soon open the possibility, for instance, of hiking from Biddeford’s Southern Maine Medical Center to Kennebunk Elementary school along a relatively straight line. Hikers are unlikely to encounter traffic ”“ except when crossing the Maine Turnpike by footbridge.
This week the organization marked an important milestone by opening an off-road trail through western Biddeford, Arundel and Kennebunk. The right-of-way has always gotten a certain amount of foot and bicycle traffic, but now it is marked, mapped, and improved. A new bridge crosses the Kennebunk River.
Next year, an additional 1.2 miles will be added after the footbridge spans the turnpike near Kennebunk Plaza. Elsewhere, a four-mile section will eventually extend the trail from Old Orchard Beach to Thornton Academy in Saco.
