With school committee post filled, a seat is now open on the

City Council.

WESTBROOK – The Westbrook School Committee unanimously voted to appoint Ward 5 City Councilor Suzanne Joyce as Emily Serway’s replacement Tuesday night.

Serway resigned from the committee a week earlier, citing personal matters she needs to attend to. Her resignation opened up the at-large seat she held since being elected in 2009.

The vote did not come as a surprise, as Brendan Rielly, city council president and Democratic City Committee member, previously said Joyce had expressed interest in the post.

Her appointment to the school committee means she will have to resign from her Ward 5 council seat. City Democrats will make a recommendation on her replacement, but Rielly said Tuesday it is still too early to publicly name the candidates.

“A number of people are interested,” he said, “and more are considering it.”

He expected that Joyce’s replacement would be named at the Dec. 6 council meeting. A meeting of the city Democrats to decide on a recommendation is likely to occur the weekend before the council meeting, he said.

At the school committee meeting Tuesday night, the members expressed thanks to Serway for her time and commitment.
